Have you believed the lie that prosperity means that God is pleased with you, and hard times means that somehow you are in sin?

Great blog, Eric. This quote really resonated with me. Sadly, many victims of abuse (physical, sexual, emotional) have this distorted view of God - that He rewards them when they are good, and punishes them when they are bad. When church leaders reinforce this stuff, it only adds to the spiritual bondage and confusion. Is it any wonder the world isn't interested in what they think Christianity offers? We come desperately looking for healing, and what we get is an eternal guilt trip.

Thank you Seeker. I was unfamiliar w/ Zech 3, but read it after reading your comment, and agree that it is a beautiful picture of what God has done with each of us.

One of my favorite passages concerning Satan's accusations is Zechariah 3. First, Satan accuses the man who is dressed in filthy clothing and standing before the Lord. It is interesting what the Lord says to Satan. "I, the LORD, reject your accusations, Satan. Yes, the LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem rebukes you. This man is like a burning stick that has been snatched from the fire." What I am saying is that we, too, are burning sticks snatched from the fire, dressed in filthy clothing. We are chosen, but only by God's mercy and grace. When we start to think we DESERVE blessings, we are forgetting what Jesus died for. If we deserved blessings, Jesus wouldn't have had to die for us. Our inheritance is reserved for us in heaven. Anything else God gives us in this life is unmerited. Not to make light of Job's plight, but maybe God wanted to show us very clearly what our life could be like without without His great mercy and grace.
