I found this post searching for details of the John Wesley brick story ;) and, having just acknowledged a call to enter the ministry, this message is very timely and important. Thanks be to God, and thank you somewhat as well ;P for this post!

I think the desire to be worshiped stems from the normal desire for affirmation that has been distorted by the fall of man.In the Old Testament, Lucifer the angel was affirmed by God, but succumbed to the desire to be worshiped, then was cast out of heaven onto the earth where he could tempt humans with this same desire (to be worshiped rather than affirmed by God). Yet in the New Testament, we learn a better way through Jesus' example. When he was obedient in baptism, even though He did not need to be cleansed, He was affirmed by God verbally and through the gift of the Holy Spirit. He submitted to God, humbly, even being baptized by a sinner! So our affirmation comes from submission, humility, obedience... Yes, it is so absolutely not the way of the world!!
