Selling GODs word, GOD did not say, go unto all nation and sell my word, it was go unto all nations and tell my word. If you have not looked up the, the Definition of selling is: "the exchange of goods for an agreed sum of money".
You are saying we should sell GODs word which ( selling ) brings in money, not like telling and teaching GODs word which is bring people to know Chirst
as their LORD and Saviour. """" tell and teach GODs word and sell """"

Eric, thanks for getting out there and putting this post for others to ponder. It's an often-asked question but I would tend to agree with Alan (the first commenter) and some of your own comments. We are COMMUNICATING A MESSAGE to the public in a variety of forms be it the building, the yellow page ad (are those still effective?), blogs, billboards, etc. Our church has a HUGH Summer Spectacular (we are too big to call it a VBS I guess! HA) and it's intended to entertain with God's great message and to bring in as many kids as possible and flood them with the Good News. Some would argue that we could spend our money on overseas missions instead of t-shirts, wall decorations that get thrown away in a week, or broadway-style costumes. But it's an AMAZING message that God wants us to share so aren't we obligated to give it our best? For some, that's been the "first fruits" argument in deciding if it was OK to wear jeans or shorts to church instead of a suit. I think most have gotten past that now but are we ready to give our first fruits in communication this great message? My twin brother and I are marketing coaches (like Alan) and it's great to see churches actually having these thoughts. Appreciate the forum for letting me share my comments. www.MarketingTwins.com -donny-

Alan - thank you for your thoughts. You're absolutely right that younger generations in particular have been marketed to death and can see right through attempts to push Christianity. Much more important to let our lives speak for themselves. That will be more effective than any amount of talking.

I believe that we are God's marketing arm. And we must live up to that expectation.

As a marketing coach I've discovered that far too many churches aren't focused on letting the world know they are there. We aren't necessarily selling God, but letting people know that there are answers to their life struggles available.

Another issue I see in some churches is that they are "selling" Christianity, and in the marketing world whenever marketing attempts to PUSH our product on the world it almost always ends up not working. However, when we make our marketing about "providing what the people need" it connects and starts the conversation. Starting the conversation is where our marketing of the church should start. Once that conversation is started and we've gotten the attention of those who need us, THEN they get to know us.
