Page 1 of 8 Reconciling Jesus with the Old Testament God
As I said earlier, I began in January to preach through Colossians, and one of the most prominent passages, Colossians 1:15-19, talks about how Jesus is the image of the invisible God. This sentiment is shared by other writers, such as John and the writer of Hebrews: The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven (Hebrews 1:3). Most importantly, it was taught by Jesus. Two examples are John 10:27-33 and John 14:8-10: My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. I and the Father are one." Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?" "We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.” (John 10:27-33) Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? (John 14:8-10) Jesus said that if you’ve seen Him, you’ve seen the Father. Jesus reveals the character of God perfectly. Jesus, who knew all of what we call the Old Testament by heart, said that the God revealed in the Law, the Writings, and the Prophets, the whole Tanakh, the whole Old Testament, had exactly the same character and divinity as the Father did. |
