We’ve been looking at four snapshots from the book of Acts of the church as it was meant to be, the church in all its potential.  Week one showed us a church that was devoted to each other – to being together, learning together, serving each others needs.  Week two reminded us that the greatest witness to the gospel is changed lives.  And last week, we saw how the early church was marked by fearlessness, boldness, and great conviction, even in the face of suffering and persecution.

This week we’ll be in Acts 6.  In this chapter, we find the early church experiencing a tension that has always existed, no matter how big or small the church is.  It’s a tension that has always existed in our church and will always come up, whether we grow or stay the same size.  It’s the tension between inreach and outreach, between caring for those who are already in the church and reaching those who are outside the church.  It’s a tension that is felt whenever people feel they are being overlooked, or whenever people feel like the church is doing nothing to reach beyond its walls.
