We’re in the second week of a four week series looking at four snapshots of the early church as recorded in the Book of Acts.  The reason I’ve chosen this as the place to start for the new year is that I want with all my heart for this church to be all that God intended for it to be.  I believe so strongly that when the church is functioning as Jesus intended, there is no more life changing group of people on the planet.  When the church is caring for others with the love of God, when the Spirit of God is at work, when needs are being met, when your soul is being inspired through worship and teaching, when there is deep friendship and community, there is nothing on earth like it.

In the first two chapters, a lot has happened – Jesus has ascended to heaven with instructions that his disciples are to be his witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth; the disciples have received the Holy Spirit, and through the subsequent preaching by Peter, 3000 were added to their number.  They have been meeting together in the temple courts and in homes, devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to fellowship, to eating together, to prayer, selling their possessions so that they can care for all the needs that come their way.  And not only are they seeing miracles done, the last line of chapter 2 says that God added to their number daily those who were being saved.  Lord, we pray that this might be so in our church as well.
