But if the gospel of Jesus Christ is true, if this Bible is really God’s Word, then the truth is that your death will be the single greatest moment of your life. That every second that passes brings you closer to the climax of your life, the pinnacle of your existence. If the gospel is true, then instead of envying the vitality of the young as our culture teaches, we should instead envy those of you who are older, because you are probably closer than we are to being more fully alive than any of us could ever hope to be in this life. On the day that you die, all of your suffering will be gone, all of your diseases healed, all of your guilt banished, all of your despair forgotten, all of your questions answered, and all your fears and insecurities cast out forever, and you will spend eternity in the presence of the Lover of your Soul, the source of all beauty and goodness and love and joy. That is the truth if this is really the word of God. But how many of you really believe that the best is yet to come, that death is not an end to be feared but rather the entrance into an infinitely more glorious existence? Or have you not heard about heaven? Do you not know what the Bible has to say about the new heavens and the new earth, about what God has in store for the believer? Over the next seven weeks, up until Christmas, I am going to teach you what the Bible has to say about death and the life after, about heaven and hell, and about the new heavens and the new earth. I can’t wait to tell you about resurrection, and restoration, and renewal, and reconciliation, about all you have to look forward to when you die and how that reality can transform your life in the here and now. Trust me when I tell you that this will not just be pie in the sky when you die, but a reality that can transform every facet of your life. This is going to be an amazing series. |
