Listen to this sermonPlay
This morning is our fourth Bible in Two Years sermon.  Many of us at NewLife have taken the challenge of reading through the Bible in Two Years, and every 6 weeks or so we take a break from the current sermon series to check in, to hear a shorter sermon on a topic that has arisen during recent readings, and to leave opportunity for discussion groups after the service.  Even if you aren’t reading through the Bible in Two Years, the discussion groups are a great way to meet people and talk about an aspect of the life of faith.

We are currently reading through Luke and the book of Numbers.  These past couple of months have been more challenging, as Leviticus and Numbers don’t normally lend themselves to easy personal application.  The big focus is of course on the laws of the covenant God set up with the people of Israel after he delivered them from slavery in Egypt, and since many of those laws no longer apply to us under the new covenant that Jesus inaugurated in His blood, it can be a difficult section of the Bible to read.  But this morning, I want to look at what is probably the pivotal story in the book of Numbers this morning by looking at the life of Caleb, which is in line with the current sermon series, called “The Power of One Life.” All summer I’ll be looking at the difference that different Biblical characters made in their generation, and I believe the story of Caleb is a story with relevance to us today, both personally and as a church.

We are in an exciting season at NewLife.  As we’ve been considering a move to the Hitchcock building, it’s been clear that there are incredible possibilities, but also serious challenges and doubts as well.   And in the end, big decisions have to be made that have the potential to either lead to incredible growth and potential, or could bring inevitable death.  And along with that decision will come many other decisions as well.

Now, decision making can paralyze me.  I find myself often afraid to make a wrong decision, and in the end wind up making either a bad decision or a good decision too late.  I can go over the pros and cons of a decision forever, or ask someone I trust and just do whatever they tell me.  I have found that decision making and the will of God is one of the most challenging aspects of the life of faith.
