This morning, I’m finishing up the Power of One Life series with the story of a man that sums up very well what we’ve learned throughout the series.  It’s the story of Gideon from Judges 6-8, which is also right about where we’re at in the Bible in Two Years reading campaign.  The background on this story is that the Israelites have entered the Promised Land under Joshua and have been told by God to drive out all that is opposed to the worship of God, lest those things become stumbling blocks to them:

Numbers 33:53-55 - Take possession of the land and settle in it, for I have given you the land to possess.  54 Distribute the land by lot, according to your clans. To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one. Whatever falls to them by lot will be theirs. Distribute it according to your ancestral tribes.  55 "'But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land, those you allow to remain will become barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will give you trouble in the land where you will live.

Now, some people may be shocked by all the violence and the need to destroy all that is foreign to worship of God, but this is serious business – God is trying to redeem the world, save what has been lost.  And he can not play games with it.  He has raised up a people who are to be a light to the world, so that all nations would be blessed through the family of Abraham.  And in order for that to happen, they can not be compromised, or just muddle through.  There is much to be learned here.  The salvation of the world is serious business, and those things which ensnare you must be destroyed, or your witness will be rendered ineffective.
