We’ve been going through the book of Proverbs this summer, spending time looking at the subject of wisdom. This morning we’ll be dealing with a subject that has the potential to derail your life and your wisdom more than anything else, and often in a very subtle fashion, and that is pride. Let’s read a few passages that deal with pride:

Proverbs 11:2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

Proverbs 15:25 The LORD tears down the proud man's house but he keeps the widow's boundaries intact.

Proverbs 16:18-19 Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. 19 Better to be lowly in spirit and among the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud.

Proverbs 21:4 Haughty eyes and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, are sin!

Proverbs 28:26 He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe.

Look at the strong words that are used – disgrace, destruction, sin, tears down, fool. For the proud man, the end is clear, and it is not good. This morning, I want to look at three things with regards to pride – what it is, what it does, and how we can deal with it.

Firstly, what is pride, and how do you recognize it in your life?
