This kind of pride leads to destruction, as Proverbs 16:18-19 said. Consider some of the things that pride does, according to Proverbs:
1) Proverbs 13:10 – “Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.” The proud man does not listen to or seek out advice, because he is not humble enough to admit his need. And this lack of humility will only lead to destruction. 2) Proverbs 21:4 - “Haughty eyes and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, are sin!” Just as a lamp lights up the world for all to see by its light, the proud heart is the lamp of the wicked, causing him to see everything through self-serving eyes. Instead of looking to serve, he asks how others can serve him and give him glory. Think about how James put it in James 2:1-5:
James 2:1-5 - My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favoritism. 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, "Here's a good seat for you," but say to the poor man, "You stand there" or "Sit on the floor by my feet," 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?
3) Proverbs 28:26 – “He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe.” The one who thinks he is self-sufficient and does not need God is a fool. Consider Israel, brought out of slavery by God, fed and given water through their desert travels, brought into the Promised Land without having to fight, and then thinking they can live without God once they’re there. 4) Proverbs 15:25 – “The LORD tears down the proud man's house but he keeps the widow's boundaries intact.” What is worse, when you act in pride, looking to glorify yourself, you are working against God himself, who is a God who gives glory to others and asks his people to do the same.
Some of you are headed for destruction because the decisions you are making have more to do with your pride and convincing yourself and others that you matter than they do with honoring God. Some of you are making decisions about work and relationships and how you use your time primarily because of your pride, because you want people to see you in a certain way or because you need to see yourself in a certain way. You are working against God.
