There are some people in this world that have their next ten years mapped out.  They know where they want to go with their lives, and they know what it’s going to take to get there.  They know how they want to raise their children, and every moment of their day is intentional, from the time they get up to what they read to their kids, to the dinners they prepare.  These people are able to think ahead, and plan their lives according to the vision and hopes they have for their lives.  They go to the grocery store with a map of where every item they need is located, with coupons attached, so that they can breeze through without having to retrace their steps.  They have finished their Christmas shopping before Thanksgiving comes around, so that they can sit back and enjoy December while everyone else rushes around madly.  I bow down to such people and stand in awe of their forward-thinking, visionary abilities, because I am not one of them.

You see, there are other people like me who don’t even know if there’s anything in the fridge for lunch today.  There are people like me who retrace their steps ten times in the grocery store, only to return and realize they forgot three of the most important things on their list.  These people aren’t sure what they are doing over the weekend until Friday rolls around.  People like this live in the moment and have a difficult time looking more than an hour ahead, let alone 5 or 10 years down the road.

I know that my wife and I are very different in this respect.  When it’s time for bed, my brain says, “time for bed!” and I hit the pillow.  Then I look over at Michele, and even though she’s not saying a word, I can see her brain going a mile a minute, thinking ahead and planning for the next day, and I have to say to her, “shut your brain off!”  Of course, I wind up getting the good night’s sleep, while she wakes up ready to accomplish everything that needs to be done the next day.

I’m talking, of course, about vision, mission, and strategy.  I’m talking about living your life with purpose, thinking ahead, having goals and keeping them in mind so that the way you live your life today brings you closer to where you want to go.  I believe that mission, vision, and strategy are so important to living with success and excellence, whether it’s with grocery shopping, cleaning the house, running a business, or following God as a church.  The ability to look one week, one month, one year, or even ten years down the road can give you the freedom and purpose to live the way you want to live today.
